Learning Disability Physiotherapy

Our aim together will be to provide patient, accessible and enjoyable sessions that celebrate achievement.

I work with young adults from 14 upwards, transitioning from Children’s Services to adult, which can be a tricky time and can offer support and activity at home or college/day centre, depending on where you need the support.

I also work with any adult with a learning disability, through life experiences, palliative care, injury and illness. My specialism is people with complex and profound disabilities, who may be neuro-divergent, have communication needs or behaviours that can challenge in traditional settings.

If you have a learning and physical disability, then I am the physio for you. I have specialised in my career with families, carers, support workers and individuals with a variety of needs and enjoy working to gain a great quality of life, where you can look forward to freedom of movement and the joy of touch and sensory input from exploring your environment.

I am a creative physiotherapist with a functional approach, laterally thinking of ways to bring out the best in someone’s ability to move. I learn with you, taking time to get to know you and what you enjoy and want to achieve. I can adapt most exercises or activities to a level you can participate in.

Typical physiotherapy input can be:

  • 24-Hour Postural Care: Manage seating, specialized sleep systems and positioning to reduce pain, pressure sores, and soft-tissue tightening.

  • Mobility and Falls Prevention: Assess walking, balance, and coordination, and provide tailored exercise programmes or equipment like wheelchairs and walking aids.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight and fitness: Looking at access to public exercise facilities as well as specialised or adapted fun activities to keep you moving.

  • Respiratory Care: Promote active breathing, clear airways, and safe positioning or techniques to reduce chest infections, including preparation for eating and drinking and maintaining a safe swallow, working with a Speech and Language Therapist if able.

  • Rehabilitation: Support recovery following an injury, surgery, or acute illness.

  • Carer Training: Educate and train family members, support workers, and day-centre staff on safe handling and daily exercise integration.

As a mobile physiotherapist, I can go to where you need advice and input and find more ways to help you.

Give me a call to talk through what I can offer.
